Low tower beacon

The tower beacon on Pärnäs contains a book of condolences that relates to the nearby monument to the victims of the Estonia ferry disaster. These kinds of pyramid-roofed, cubical timber frames were used in the Berghamn region, for instance in Blåskär and Björköhufvud (without a mast), and in Gråharar on Utö (with a mast in the shape of a cone standing on its tip). A similarly shaped large, cubical, vertically clad tower beacon was built in 1819 in Bogskär, Kihti, in the municipality of Sottunga. It is 32 feet tall (approximately 9.6 metres), and has a red roof, black walls and a white plinth. It guides boats between the Åland Islands and the Turku archipelago.
